5G technology, an industry called to change the world

Karla García Gil Journalist

5G technology refers to the fifth generation of mobile networks to which we have access. This generation will increase connection speed, minimize web response time and multiply the number of connected devices. It will also enable everyday objects to connect with us and with each other in real time.

One of the most immediate and important advances is the issue of speed. The 5G network will allow browsing at up to 10 GBps (gigabytes per second), which means that it will operate 10 times faster than the main fiber optic systems on the market.

In addition, the network’s response time could be reduced to 5 milliseconds, which, although practically imperceptible to humans, would allow us to connect in real time. This is important, for example, to minimize the response time of an autonomous vehicle, which would have an impact on its responsiveness and therefore on its safety level.

5G technology opens up a wide range of possibilities in the development of mobile devices, autonomous robotics, various apps, autonomous vehicles, urban furniture, electronic devices that we have at home and Artificial Intelligence, thanks to the fact that it is 100 times faster than 4G technology.

Advantages and disadvantages of 5G technology

To think that the future is still far away is to forget that tomorrow is already the future, and we will be living it as soon as we open our eyes at dawn. In this path of technological advances, we went from having a truly pocket device that was used to make and receive calls from (almost) anywhere (1G), to being able to make up for that need by choosing to send a text message instead of calling (2G).

Investment opportunity

The 5G generation encourages investment opportunities in this industry for a promising future. The aforementioned network is expected to generate a worldwide economic value of $12.3 billion by 2035, according to data from IHS Markit.

In this regard, Grand View Research warns that the global 5G services market could still expand at a compound annual growth rate of 46.2% between 2021 and 2028.

A leap in time

The 1G network, the one used in the first mobile devices that only allowed calls, was left far in the past and was displaced by the 2G technology that introduced text messaging and later incorporated Internet connection with the 3G generation.

Today, most mobile devices use the 4G network, corresponding to broadband, which has brought mainly the reproduction of videos in real time (streaming), something we are already accustomed to but that seemed so far away before.

The deployment of the 5G generation undoubtedly represents a technological revolution that will make it possible to trigger from the simplest to the most complex tasks; for example, from the alarm of the washing machine or refrigerator to the performance of surgical interventions, the coordination of agricultural work and the management of fleets of autonomous vehicles, all by means of devices controlled remotely.
